Urban regeneration policies are area-based interventions addressing multidimensional problems. In this study, we analyse the impact of urban regeneration processes on the evolution of inequalities in mortality from certain causes. On the basis of Fundamental Cause Theory (FCT), our main hypothesis is that the impact of urban regeneration programmes will be more clearly observed on the causes of preventable deaths, as these programmes imply a direct or indirect improvement to a whole range of ‘flexible resources’ that residents in relevant areas have access to, and which ultimately may influence the inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and health.

The Center for Urban Political Sociology and Policies (CSP) has published the book “Improving the City Transforming its Neighborhoods. Urban Regeneration in Andalusia (1990-2015)” coordinated by Professor Clemente J. Navarro Yáñez, director of CSPL. The book compiles the main results of the RUCOSA project (Regeneration and Social Cohesion in Andalusia) carried out by the CSPL team, the project analyzes in a comparative way different urban regeneration programs and projects developed in Andalusia to observe its impact on quality of life and social cohesion of the territories in which they have developed.

This report examines the impact of urban regeneration projects, showing evidence of the change in the neighborhoods where interventions have been enhanced compared to similar ones where there has been no intervention or it has reached much lower levels; That is, the experimental and equivalent areas defined in the previous report
The following report details the methodology used to analyze the impact of the projects. A quasi-experimental analytical strategy has been followed comparing the areas in which each project has developed with similar ones in which a project has not been developed, which we will call ‘equivalent areas’.

This fourth report of the RUCOSA project analyzes the design of urban regeneration projects in Andalusia taking into account both its substantive dimension as its procedural dimension. However, it is not intended to provide a detailed analysis of each particular project, as is common in the analysis of urban regeneration, but to provide a systematic and comparative analysis between different actuation projects.

This first research report, aims to present some of the basic ideas behind the practice of the urban regeneration policies. First we will try to argue that the practice of urban regeneration is based on a certain conception of the problems facing urban areas and the ways they can be resolved. This policy sets a frame that is reflected in its substantive and procedural dimensions (contents and intervention strategies). Secondly, it briefly review the ways that has adopted the practice of urban regeneration, as its current formulation is due to different frames that have been previously developed and have configured their idea and current developments.
